If you want to find the perfect Jamaican souvenir, think about what stuck out to you during your holiday. Another key consideration is who you intend to give the gift to and what they like. You may need to shop around to find the best options. On this island, top-rated souvenirs include locally made t-shirts, paintings, Blue Mountain Coffee, and even hot sauce. To help you decide on the best options, we’ve compiled a list of the 18 best Jamaica souvenirs. Any of these will be a great gift to take home after your vacation!

1. Reggae music and memorabilia

Reggae originated in Jamaica. This is the ideal island to visit if you want to immerse yourself in reggae music and perhaps discover new tunes while on vacation. There are many reggae artists on this island, and you might learn about ones you've never heard of while you're there. In addition to reggae, there is a diverse spectrum of local music to be enjoyed. On this island, dancehall, dub, and ska are also popular genres. Many of the local bars and clubs will have these threads playing. Where to buy the best souvenirs in Jamaica

Now that you have an idea of the souvenirs available, here are a few places where you can find some of the best souvenirs from Jamaica:

Ocho Rios Craft Market

Jamaica Souvenirs: The Ultimate Guide

The local markets are a fantastic option for shopping for souvenirs or artisan goods in Jamaica. There are quite a few craft markets in Jamaica, and the Ocho Rios Craft Market is the largest in Ocho Rios. At this location, you'll find over 100 vendors, which means you'll have loads of options to shop around for Jamaican souvenirs.

Negril Craft Market

The Negril Craft Market is another location worth checking out if you want a variety of souvenirs all in one place. While you’ll find quite a few small shops along the Seven Mile Beach selling a variety of souvenirs and other products, the Negril Craft Market, located just off Norman Manley Blvd, houses a collection of vendors selling locally hand-made crafts including wood carvings, baskets, jewelry, and more.

Port Antonio Craft Market

More local crafts and souvenirs can be found at the Port Antonio Craft Market. This small and vibrant market is a great place to enjoy an authentic Jamaican outing while browsing around for souvenirs. Hand-loomed fabrics, embroidery, silk screening, woodcarvings, oil paintings, woven straw goods, and locally made sandals are among the crafts available at this market.

Montego Bay Craft Market

The Montego Bay Craft Market is a convenient option for souvenir shopping as it is located in the heart of the city. This market offers some of the best deals you’ll find for authentic souvenirs and keepsakes in Montego Bay. Tours to the various craft markets in Jamaica, including the Montego Bay Craft Market, can be organized through your resort.

Good to know: Ocho Rios resorts and Negril resorts are fun options for a vacation that has a little something for every member of your family. These resorts offer waterparks, spas, and plenty of things to do around the clock!

Top tips for shopping for souvenirs in Jamaica:

Made in China

You might be surprised to find this out, but some of the souvenirs sold on islands including Jamaica are actually made in China or elsewhere. Pay close attention to tags and ask questions to ensure that the item you’re interested in was actually made in Jamaica.

Shop around for various options

Purchasing the first things that catch your eye is a sure way to overspend. To avoid this, have an idea of what you want when you go souvenir shopping in Jamaica. If you know what you want, you’ll be better able to shop around for that item and other things you’re interested in as you can compare prices as you go around exploring the various shops.

Negotiate a fair price

Depending on where you go in Jamaica, some vendors will give you a higher initial price with the expectation that you would bargain. If you don’t try to negotiate, you can end up paying more for an item than it's worth. Try to bargain for a better price, especially if you saw the same item somewhere else for less money.

Stop the hassle with a few words

When it comes to making sales, some vendors can be extremely persistent. This is probably because the competition is quite intense for vendors in Jamaica. A simple ‘no thank you’ should be sufficient if you’re really not interested in what is being offered.

Good to know: U.S. dollars are generally accepted in Jamaica, so you can choose to either pay for your souvenirs in USD or pay in the local currency. It can be more convenient to pay in the local currency due to conversion variances and because of the possibility of vendors not having enough change in your currency.

The great Jamaican souvenir hunt: Bringing a taste of the island back with you

Jamaica is a truly fascinating destination, so of course you will want to take something amazing home with you to cherish the memories and share your experience on this island with others. When it comes to selecting the best souvenirs, you’ll simply have to decide what feels right to you, and what you think your family and friends will like. To find the best Jamaica souvenirs, you can arrange trips to the various local shopping areas from your all-inclusive Jamaica resort.

Tubing might also be referred to as inner tubing or kite tubing depending on where you go. This adventure entails the rider sitting in a large tube that is towed by a boat. The tubes are typically round and come in a variety of sizes. Most tubes (also known as biscuits or donuts) can accommodate multiple riders.

Tubing is a great option if you're visiting the Caribbean with your children and want to ensure that they have rave reviews afterward!

Some of the pluses of SNUBA is that you can dive up to 20 feet deep with the help of a breathing apparatus, minus the heavy equipment that would come along with scuba diving. Island Village is a good option if you’re looking for Jamaican souvenirs, jewelry, liquor, cigars, and more. The majority of the items sold here are duty-free which means you’ll pay less for them at this location as opposed to some other shopping centers in Jamaica. If you want to shop here and take in the ambiance, the best time is in the morning or late afternoon. If you want to avoid crowds, you may not want to visit Island Village on Wednesdays as this tends to be a busy cruise ship day. Island Village also has a few restaurants that you can choose from to enjoy tasty Jamaican cuisine before or after shopping.

Taj Mahal Shopping Center (Ocho Rios)

Next up is the Taj Mahal Shopping Center in Ocho Rios. This shopping center promises to “make your dreams come true”. Certainly, this can be the case, especially if you’re into duty-free shopping or just want to shop somewhere with a little bit of everything. The Taj Mahal Shopping Center is one of the larger shopping centers in Jamaica and you’ll find duty-free shops here selling items by various brands including watches by Seiko, Citizen, and Swiss Army, fragrances by Calvin Klein and Chanel, and more.

A visit to the Taj Mahal Shopping Center is recommended if you're looking to shop somewhere with good jewelry offerings, authentic leather goods, duty-free prices, and more. The Taj Mahal is popular with visitors looking for souvenir items as well. Shops like Cool Runnings and Caribbean Paradise are ideal for these and you’ll find items like Jamaican CDs, hats, beachwear, rum, and coffee. You can also stop by shops like Island Craft if you’re interested in straw hats, wood carvings, Jamaican artwork, and other unique items.

If you go to the Taj Mahal Shopping Center during your vacation, be prepared to bargain for the items that you want. The vendors can at times be a tad pushy, but you can simply say “no, thank you” if you're not interested. The good thing about shopping here is that the prices tend to be competitive. The available food offerings are appealing as well — there are three restaurants including Mama Marley’s, Reggae Ally, and Café Express.

Good to know: You’ll be able to find a currency exchange and an ATM at the Taj Mahal Shopping Center. It is possible to get both U.S. dollars (USD) and Jamaican dollars (JMD) from the ATM at this location.

Times Square Mall (Negril)

Times Square Mall is loved by both locals and visitors in Jamaica. This is a mid-size shopping center located near the beach in Negril. At Times Square Mall, you can expect to find items including souvenirs and gifts, jewelry, accessories, clothing, swimwear, electronics, and more. Keep in mind that some of the shops here are duty-free and some aren’t. There’s a focus at some stores on Jamaican-made clothing and accessories, so if that’s what you're interested in, this is a good place to check it out.

While shopping at Times Square Mall, keep in mind that bartering is encouraged. The stores here expect this, so if you’ve found a better price elsewhere, try to bargain. Some popular finds at Times Square Mall include Blue Mountain coffee, Jamaican rum, clothing, hats (rasta colors are a popular option), towels, cigars, shot glasses, wood carvings, jewelry, and more. In addition to shopping, you can enjoy the restaurants and food stands at the mall to grab a bite or even just a drink. If you want a quick bite, try some jerk chicken or Jamaican patties.

Good to know: At Times Square Mall, you’ll also be able to find currency exchange facilities, ATMs, and a pharmacy. There’s a supermarket located in the mall as well.

Rutland Point Craft Market (Negril)

The Rutland Point Craft Market in Negril is an excellent option for souvenirs and craft items in Jamaica. This market was one of the first to begin operations on the island over 30 years ago. At this location, you'll find a wide selection of authentic Jamaican merchandise including crafts, paintings, pottery, t-shirts, and swimwear. Most of the items sold at this market are made locally.

The Rutland Point Craft Market is near some of the most popular Negril resorts. This means you can stay in this area and have easy access to good shopping. It is possible to walk to the Rutland Point Craft Market from the resort area. When shopping here, you can expect friendly service, good deals, and a good enough selection that almost everyone who goes can find something to take home with them as a Jamaica memento.

Expert tip: If you're looking for the perfect Jamaica resorts for your family vacation, keep in mind that some of the Ocho Rios resorts are pretty amazing too. Beaches Resorts has an Ocho Rios location that can be an exciting option for an island vacation that includes lots of beach time.

Half Moon Shopping Village is open-air and has a casual, tropical feel to it. There are a few restaurants here and among the most popular is the Royal Stocks English-style pub. Some bar options can be found at this shopping center as well. While at Half Moon, you might also want to check out The Bob Marley Experience next door, which is essentially a museum that is dedicated to the life and music of legendary reggae artist Bob Marley. Between these two locations, you’ll be able to find quite a few reggae-themed souvenirs while in Jamaica. Half Moon Shopping Village is loved by visitors because of its close to a few lovely beaches.

Main Street Jamaica (Montego Bay)

Good to know: If there are specific items that you want to take home from Jamaica, you might want to check out customs and airline restrictions ahead of purchasing these. This is important just in case there are specific limitations attached to the items that you have in mind.

Tips and tricks to shopping in Jamaica:

Every destination has its shopping dos and don’ts, and this is something to be familiar with when going on vacation. Here are some tips and tricks that you might find useful for shopping in Jamaica:

  • Expect to haggle: The vendors at craft markets and other shopping centers in Jamaica can be super persistent! This means that you should know what you want to get so you won't be sidetracked. Once you find the item that you want, try to bargain. This is expected, and you might end up paying more than you would have otherwise if you don’t. If you plan on haggling, you’ll also want to bring smaller bills with you (more on this below!).

  • Jamaica’s general consumption tax rate (GCT) is 16.5%, and applies to certain items at established stores. This does not include items sold by craft vendors and open markets. The consumption tax is the equivalent of a sales tax. Factor this in when heading to certain shopping centers in Jamaica.

  • Carry small bills so that you can have as close to exact change as possible: Some vendors only accept cash, so if you want to buy anything, you’ll need to come prepared for this. Additionally, it makes sense to have cash in the local currency and small bills so that you don't have to worry about the vendors not having enough change. Keep in mind that if you pay in USD, you're likely to get your change in local currency. This can be inconvenient if, at the end of your trip, you wind up with way more JMD than you actually need.

  • Most stores will accept U.S. dollars, but make sure you know the exchange rates if you want to pay with them. Though this can be convenient, you might wind up paying more if you pay in USD (or any other currency including British pounds) than you would with local currency. This is because the exchange rates can vary in Jamaica based on where you’ll be spending your money. Ask about the exchange rate before you buy to see if it's worth it.

  • Plan ahead!: With any vacation, chances are higher of a smooth experience if you plan. In that regard, if you’re planning on shopping in Jamaica, it can be useful to put together a budget. This can help you to avoid splurging as you’ll have an idea of how much you’re willing to spend ahead of time. Do some research before you go as well so you can find out where to get the items you want, and how much they are expected to cost. Get as much information as you can so that once you get there, your shopping experience goes off without a hitch!

Overall, it is useful to convert your shopping money to Jamaican currency (JMD) at the start of your trip, so you can avoid all of the confusion that can come with exchange rates, cash payments, and more while in Jamaica!

Good to know: When shopping in Jamaica, definitely make a point of noting cruise ship days. This is important if you want to avoid crowds on the busiest days.

Shopping in Jamaica is just the adventure you need!

White sands, rum, and reggae are amazing, but being able to find that perfect place to shop for great souvenirs can add to your vacation experience too. Whether you want a quiet and relaxing shopping experience or you want to head out to the most bustling shopping towns in Jamaica, you're bound to find a location on our list to suit your needs. 6 important things to know when planning a beach wedding

30+ Things To Know When Planning a Beach Wedding

There are a few things you’ll need to consider while getting ready to plan your beach wedding. If you’re traveling for a destination wedding and staying at an all-inclusive resort like Beaches or Sandals, you can ask your wedding planning team most of these questions ahead of time. They will tell you all you need to know about how to get married on the beach and help you with plenty of great ideas to make your big day even more special.

Wondering how to plan a beach wedding? Below are some of the things you need to keep in mind:

1. Make sure the beach is accessible to everyone involved.

30+ Things To Know When Planning a Beach Wedding

Once they've discovered and fallen in love with a seaside wedding destination, many people may overlook the accessibility element. Don't forget to consider your guests' convenience, as well as how simple or difficult it will be to reach the spot from a significant route. This can also have an impact on the ease with which seats, tables, and even food delivery can be put up and transported. Make sure your site isn't too far out of the way, and if it is, make the necessary preparations.

2. Don’t let the sound of waves drown out your vows.

30+ Things To Know When Planning a Beach Wedding

There’s nothing quite as magical as the waves crashing against the shore while taking a romantic walk down the beach. When you’re trying to exchange vows, this is a completely different story. To work around this, get a professional sound system, and look into ways to get it powered up out on the beach. You can also rent or buy a wireless microphone and speaker for use by the officiant. Another option is to invest in a windscreen for your microphone, which will ensure the wind isn’t louder than what you’re actually trying to say. Before you rent or make these purchases, find out if your wedding planner or resort has them available.

3. Make your décor windproof.

30+ Things To Know When Planning a Beach Wedding

You’ll need to tweak your décor to suit the outdoors, especially in windy locations. This means you may want to think twice about super lavish flowers, towering candles, and even windy ribbons and balloons, which may just end up getting blown away by the wind. Use sturdy décor and avoid breakable items. Anything you can’t live without (like name tags, photos, etc.), secure with adhesive, spring, or place something heavier over top to hold them down. In terms of flowers, you also want to make sure you choose varieties that stand up well against high temperatures, and won’t wilt before the ceremony even begins.

Expert tip: Chrysanthemums, calla lilies, king protea, and orchids do well on the beach. Not convinced flowers will fit your theme or just don’t want to risk it? Go for things like fruits or even shells to add some color to the event and enhance the beach theme.

4. Make sure there’s some shade.

30+ Things To Know When Planning a Beach Wedding

Picture: Wedding reception at Beaches Turks & Caicos.

One of the crucial things to think about when planning a beach wedding is health and safety. Just as important as covering for rainy weather, you’ll need to keep in mind that outdoor environments usually mean guests will be exposed to the elements. Especially in hot climates, ensure you keep everyone cool by scheduling your beach ceremony at a time when the sun is most mild – morning or late afternoon is best. You’ll also want to make sure shade is factored in as well, especially for the sake of older people and children. With a beach or other outdoor weddings, it’s best to monitor the weather so you know what to expect. It's a good idea to source a canopy to cover the seating area or get some bamboo poles that can be draped with light, white fabric to help keep everyone cool.

5. Finger food storage: keep it cool!

30+ Things To Know When Planning a Beach Wedding

If you aren’t getting married at a resort, food storage is a serious consideration. Food that’s supposed to be refrigerated will spoil quickly in high temperatures, so you’ll need to pick wisely. This is also worth keeping in mind for cake selection – cakes made with buttercream may fight a losing battle against the heat. As a rule, don’t pick anything that’s going to melt or spoil fast.

Expert tip: If you’re concerned about food, you can also consider getting married on the beach, and having the reception at another location, like a nearby restaurant.

6. Select proper beach wedding attire.

30+ Things To Know When Planning a Beach Wedding

Your wedding day is the most important day of your life and you’re going to want to dress like it; except that you’re on the beach, so you’re also going to want to wear something that doesn’t cause you to overheat. Here are some tips and idead for staying cool, and still looking beautiful:

7 things to consider for your beach wedding attire

1. Go for a lighter dress.

30+ Things To Know When Planning a Beach Wedding

Long gowns may present challenges out on the beachfront. They may look dreamy, and you may even be able to get down the aisle mostly without issue, but the trouble may start when you try navigating the beach to take photos. If you’re wearing a super long train this can be a nightmare. Look for something lighter, or at the very least, ensure your dress can bustle easily.

2. Wear lightweight fabrics.

30+ Things To Know When Planning a Beach Wedding

The last thing you want is to wear a dress with lace trim and find out only when you get to the altar that your dress has picked up all sorts of debris from the beach along the way. It’s better to go with fabrics like chiffon or charmeuse, which will give you an airy feel, as your gown will be able to flow freely.

3. Skip the veil.

30+ Things To Know When Planning a Beach Wedding

Veils aren’t worn by all brides, but they are an absolute must for brides who want to keep it all the way traditional. In windy temperatures, an extra-long veil can have you fighting a not-so-cute windy battle. Avoid this by going for fresh flowers, or a fascinator instead.

4. Try an updo.

30+ Things To Know When Planning a Beach Wedding

Fancy updos have a way of changing your entire look. They go with just about everything, and for a beach wedding updo is a great idea to prevent your hair from taking on a life of its own during the ceremony. If you’re really set on wearing your hair down, think about hiring a stylist who will be on location throughout, just in case you need a touch-up.

5. Ditch the heels.

30+ Things To Know When Planning a Beach Wedding

Avoid the hassle of wearing heels in the sand; look into getting the perfect espadrilles or wedges for your beach wedding. If you plan early enough, you’ll be able to customize your shoes, so they’re fancy enough to make you forget that you aren’t wearing heels.

Expert tip: No matter which shoe option you choose, getting the right aisle runner will help keep your feet cool on the way to the altar. Thick flower petals or fabric work like a charm.

6. Stay tan line free.

30+ Things To Know When Planning a Beach Wedding

Tan lines may be a nightmare, especially on a wedding day when there is nothing you can do about them. Wear sunscreen (waterproof sunscreen is advised) every time you go out in the sun to protect your skin before your wedding. You don't want sunburn or tan lines on your wedding day, and neither does your bridal party. To avoid tan lines, you and your wedding party can plan bathing suits for the trip according to what everyone is wearing on the big day.

7. Say no to penguin suits.

30+ Things To Know When Planning a Beach Wedding

It's less necessary to appear fancy on the beach and more vital to keep cool. Allow the groom and his best men to dress more casually, such as in lightweight cotton pants or Bermuda shorts. These less dressy options are a fantastic on-theme and cool idea.

12 things to consider for the beach wedding ceremony

1. Get a beach permit if needed.

30+ Things To Know When Planning a Beach Wedding

Though this isn’t always required, it is worth your time to do some research, so you avoid any unnecessary problems down the line. Find out about noise regulations in both private and public settings, so you can make the proper arrangements.

2. Plan wisely, and avoid crowds.

30+ Things To Know When Planning a Beach Wedding

Picture: Beach front wedding at Sandals Barbados.

One of the things you should seek to find out in advance is when the beach is the most crowded. You’ll want to avoid this time to ensure you have enough privacy, so your wedding doesn’t turn into a circus. Usually you’ll find beaches quieter outside of weekends and holidays. Some beaches in Hawaii for example don’t allow event set-ups on public beaches. In places like this, you’ll need to instead rent a beachside villa, so you’ll still be able to take photos on the beach after your wedding ceremony.

3. Arrange sturdy seating.

30+ Things To Know When Planning a Beach Wedding

Aluminum chairs, oak benches, different forms of foldable seats, and even chic waterproof ottomans can improve visitor comfort. All of these are sturdy enough not to be blown away by the wind or sink and collapse in the sand. In certain circumstances, you may just need to provide seats for the elderly and children. It all depends on the type of wedding you're planning and how long the ceremony will be.

4. Accentuate the beach’s natural features.

30+ Things To Know When Planning a Beach Wedding

The beach is beautiful enough as it is, so you won’t need to go overboard with your decor ideas here. Instead, focus on accentuating the natural features in a way that will help bring your wedding to life. It doesn’t all need to be seashells and palm leaves; you can use the various hues of the ocean or sand to create a theme, adding elements like stones, dune glasses, and more.

5. Add in colors to contrast the light color of the sand.

30+ Things To Know When Planning a Beach Wedding

If you’re wondering what colors are best for a beach wedding, we recommend adding some color that will contrast with the sand to make the setting more vibrant. Think green, orange, or coral tones.

6. Shop local for destination weddings.

30+ Things To Know When Planning a Beach Wedding

When sourcing your décor for a destination wedding, try to purchase things from local vendors. This can help you avoid hefty importation fees, or delays that can happen if your items get detained by customs for any reason.

7. Prepare for windy conditions.

30+ Things To Know When Planning a Beach Wedding

If it can blow away, it might. Prepare for a windy day, even when not expected. Secure everything you can beforehand to avoid this. Use heavier items to weigh things down, like programs and place cards, or just get heavyweight stands. You can also tie programs neatly to chairs. If you plan on tossing dried flower petals, wait to do this, once guests arrive.

8. Prepare a shoe station.

No one wants to spend the day with sand in their shoes. With a shoe rack, guests can trade their fancy shoes for flip-flops. Make provisions at the station for guests to be able to wipe or wash the sand off their feet before making the swap. You’ll want to include a seating area, towels, a place to store shoes, and a bucket of water.

9. Have refreshments on hand.

30+ Things To Know When Planning a Beach Wedding

As with any beach day, staying hydrated is important and there's no better way to beat the heat than with cold drinks. A table set up with lemonade, ice water, or a signature cocktail will go a long way in keeping your wedding guests satisfied and refreshed.

10. Prevent bug bites.

You’ll want to keep insect repellant close at hand for any outdoor ceremony, particularly beach weddings. Try to get a good brand with ingredients that aren’t harmful, and won’t stain your dress.

11. Prepare guests with a welcome package.

30+ Things To Know When Planning a Beach Wedding

You’ll want to ensure everyone is informed about where the wedding will be taking place. Especially if the beach is a long, beautiful stretch, this will help your guests plan accordingly. Just in case anyone comes less than prepared, you can include items like travel-sized sunscreen, hand towels and fans, and bottled water in a fun welcome package.

12. Have a backup plan.

30+ Things To Know When Planning a Beach Wedding

Beach weddings are best kept short and sweet. Just in case the weather changes, have a backup plan. It’s a good idea to have a canopy or tent on hand to keep everyone cool and dry or ensure your plan B option is somewhere indoors.

4 things to consider when selecting the best beach wedding venue

1. Pick a location: close to home or a destination wedding in the Caribbean?

When it comes to planning your wedding venue, you’ll need to decide if you prefer something closer to home (perhaps somewhere you’re familiar with but never gave much thought to), or whether you want to travel and have a destination wedding.

2. Pick a date. Keep guests with kids in mind!

30+ Things To Know When Planning a Beach Wedding

If you’re traveling with family, this is likely to be a discussion you’ll need to have in a comprehensive way, incorporating breaks from schools, etc. Once all the details are ironed out, you’ll be able to pick a venue that is most convenient for you, in terms of being able to get everyone there, and considering whether the venue will be able to accommodate you and your family comfortably.

3. Choose a beach wedding venue.

30+ Things To Know When Planning a Beach Wedding

Picture: Over-the-water wedding chapel, available at Sandals Montego Bay (Jamaica), Sandals Ochi (Jamaica), Sandals South Coast (Jamaica) and Sandals Grande St. Lucian (Saint Lucia).

Planning a beach wedding will require you to think of every little detail. Are you getting married on a public beach, or is the beach you’re planning on using for your wedding a part of a resort? If it's part of a resort, you’ll need to request a wedding information packet from the resort, especially if you’re planning on staying there. If it’s a public beach, you can get information from local authorities wherever that beach is located.

Go to Wedding information Beaches Resorts
Go to Wedding information Sandals Resorts

Don’t just get your heart set on a destination wedding location based on word of mouth alone. Do your research; ask questions, check reviews, watch videos, and search for photos online if it’s a foreign location, tour the venue if you are close enough to do so.

4. Book the beach venue upfront, if it’s part of a resort.

30+ Things To Know When Planning a Beach Wedding

The last thing you want after planning your beach wedding is to arrive on the day and start setting up, only to realize you didn’t go about securing permissions in the right way. Particularly if it’s a resort, you’ll need to book the venue in advance.

Things to consider when picking a vendor

30+ Things To Know When Planning a Beach Wedding

Need some help getting your beach wedding planned and organized professionally? Get in touch with a beach wedding vendor. There are plenty of options inside and outside the US!

Before choosing a beach wedding vendor you’ll want to ensure the venue will help facilitate the process of acquiring your marriage license and certification, especially when organizing a destination beach wedding. You’ll also want to find out if they can support 24/7 communication, if there is a guest limit or restrictions to do with scheduling; find out which days are available. All of this will help when you get further into planning your big day.

Some vendors charge extra for sunset weddings or weekends, so make sure this information is clear. Find out if your prospective vendors charge additional fees for meetings, conference calls, or emails. You’ll also want to know whether their package includes professional photography and video.

Expert tip: Some beach wedding vendors give discounts for active military, firefighters, and law enforcement personnel. Even a 10% discount can save you quite a bit of money on a big expenditure like a wedding.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs) about beach weddings

Do you need special permits to have a beach wedding?

You will not always need a special permit to organize a beach wedding. It is still worth finding out to be sure. Though you may not need a permit, you should find out about limitations or restrictions that may exist relating to alcohol, music, the number of guests, and bonfires. If you do have to get a special permit, find out what it covers, and how far ahead you need to get approval. If you’re staying at a beach resort, these details will typically be arranged by your wedding team.

What to do in the event of bad weather?

Bad weather is a big seaside consideration. It’s important to ensure you have tents or another type of covered section where guests can shelter if the weather takes a turn for the worst. Also consider having a plan ‘B’ option of another location just in case an outdoor beach wedding isn’t conducive on that day.

How much is a beach wedding?

Beach weddings can be much cheaper or much more expensive than church or hotel-based weddings - it all depends on where the beach is and who it is owned by - plus all those additional extras, like decor, food and drink, the dress, and the size of the wedding party! At Sandals, if you stay 3 nights or longer your beach wedding is free!

Do you have to pay to have a wedding on the beach?

It depends. Most beach wedding locations are free. If they aren’t, the fee is usually small.

Best time for a beach wedding

Morning: 8 AM to 10.30 AM

Early morning weddings can be unconventional for some, yet they appear to work well for many couples. Getting an early start implies that everything will go smoothly, and the ceremony will not be long. For beach weddings, most beaches are less crowded early in the morning, and it may even be cooler at this time of day. With temperatures that aren't scorching, you and your guests will be more at ease, and you'll be able to transition effortlessly into a brunch or lunch celebration.

Mid-day: 11 AM to 3 PM

One of the pluses with a mid-day ceremony is that not only will you get to wake up a little later, you’ll have more time to get ready in the morning. For people with large wedding parties, this is a better option compared to the early morning ceremonies as it gives everyone time to get their hair and makeup done, and to get the little ones dressed and ready to go. If you’re planning a dinner reception afterward, the mid-day ceremony allows for a break in between that isn’t too short nor too long, so things will flow as they should.

Late afternoon: 3.30 PM to 5 PM

The scorching sun has gone down a bit by this time, and in its place will be slightly softer rays and less intense temperatures. You’ll have some of the same benefits of the mid-day ceremony, with a bit more of a party atmosphere towards the end as sunset approaches. For many couples, later afternoon ceremonies are seen as traditional, and allow you to head straight to your dinner reception.

Sunset: Depends on the time of the year

Start your ceremony at least an hour before sunset, so you can ensure there’s enough time for photos. Try to get some action shots, as well as sunset portraits. The benefits of sunset ceremonies include softer lighting (great for more intimate and romantic photos), cooler temperatures, and an amazing view. With this type of ceremony, you can also head straight to dinner afterward with friends and family.

What’s safe/environmentally friendly to throw at the couple at a beach wedding?

Biodegradable options are ideal. You may have to check with your resort (if you are staying in one) to see which options are available. Popular choices for couples include bubbles (a party favor bottle for each guest), biodegradable/sugar confetti (you can DIY), dried flowers (lavender/rose petals, etc.), bird seed (complete with a cute carrying sack), or mini beach balls.

What to wear to a beach wedding?

If you're wondering what do you wear to a beach wedding as a guest, the most important thing to remember is to follow any guidance from the bride and groom about attire and how formal the ceremony will be. The casual and breezy atmosphere of the beach may seem like the perfect excuse to dress down, but it's important to strike the right balance between comfort and style.

For women attending a beach wedding, outfits you can wear include dresses, rompers, jumpsuits, and even two-piece ensembles. For men attending a beach wedding, your outfit choices may include a traditional suit and tie, and slacks with a dress shirt.

We’ve answered more frequently asked questions about what to wear to a beach wedding below:

Can you wear white to a beach wedding as a guest?

30+ Things To Know When Planning a Beach Wedding

In recent times, there has been less of an aversion on the part of guests in wearing white to weddings. Even more so with beach weddings, which are usually a lot more casual. If you’re really set on wearing white, wear something that is not going to take away from the bride’s moment in the spotlight. It’s her wedding after all, and you’re there as a show of support. If you’re not certain, you can go with off white, or perhaps try something with a white lace overlay.

Is it a good idea to wear black to a beach wedding?

Usually, there isn’t any issue with wearing black to a wedding, but at a beach wedding, you may quickly regret this choice. Black tends to seem a little bit more formal in some cases, and you may feel out of place out on the beachfront. There is the common school of thought that black clothing is not ideal for staying cool in hot weather, so you’ll need to determine this for yourself.

What material is good for a beach wedding?

The most popular fabrics for beach wedding dresses include linen, chiffon, satin or charmeuse, tulle, lace, and taffeta. Lightweight fabrics in light colors are ideal.

What do grooms wear to a beach wedding?

This is all down to personal preference and your style choice. It is common for men to wear a short-sleeved shirt without a jacket, but it should be dressier. Consider lightweight collared shirts with colorful prints or a basic white shirt. It is also common to wear lightweight shorts like chinos or loose-fitting linen shorts.

Get ready to say 'I do' by the sea!

If you're looking for a unique and unforgettable wedding experience, a beach wedding can be a great choice. With the sand, sun, and sea as your backdrop, you can create a romantic and intimate ceremony that reflects your style and personality. Whether you choose a casual or formal event, a beach wedding can be as simple or elaborate as you desire.

For the most stress-free beach wedding, it's essential to plan carefully and prepare to navigate the challenges of an outdoor event. Having a beach wedding planner can be a lifesaver when it comes to helping you manage the details and logistics of your big day. Luckily for couples planning their nuptials at Beaches Resorts, there is a dedicated wedding planner for each ceremony whose goal is to bring the couples’ vision to life.

With this list of 30+ things to know when planning a beach wedding, you're well on your way to a successful celebration. Just remember that your wedding day is about celebrating your love and commitment to each other, no matter what happens. While planning a beach wedding can be challenging, it's also an opportunity to create unforgettable memories with your partner, family, and friends. So take a deep breath, relax, and enjoy your beach wedding, no matter what the day brings.

Best Jamaica Rums -- Sip On These Exotic Blends While Vacationing In Paradise

Barbados may have been the birthplace of rum historically, but Jamaica was one of those islands that took the rum-making process and made it into their own. That decision taken so many years ago has resulted in the production of a range of quality Jamaican rums including white rum, golden rum, aged rum, and overproof rum. Though these are the most common rums produced in Jamaica, there are a wide variety of options available.

The distinctive fermentation technique used to produce Jamaican rum sets it apart from rums made in other countries. As there are many different brands of Jamaican rum, finding the best one can really be a matter of sifting through reviews and tasting for yourself.

If you’re planning on traveling to Jamaica and want to taste some of the best rums produced on this island, we’ve listed some of our favorites that you can try during your vacation. Before getting to that though, we'll touch on a bit of Jamaica's rum history.

Good to know: Jamaica is known and loved for its amazing food, and the country’s vibrant drink options, including rums, are a great complement to the local fare. Here are some of the best Jamaica resorts where you can enjoy tasty and authentic Jamaican food and drinks.

History of Jamaican Rum

Some refer to rum as the “national drink of Jamaica”. Even those who disagree with that statement have to admit that rum, in all its forms, is one of the most popular Jamaican drinks available. This industry has been a significant contributor to the economy of Jamaica since the 17th century. The history of rum in Jamaica is quite complex, and it's important to note that sugar plays a significant role in the rum-making process.

In 1494, when Christopher Columbus brought sugar to Jamaica, he also brought alcohol. In Jamaica, the rum industry started with the establishment of Appleton Estate in 1749. The site of the Appleton Estate dates back to 1665 when the island became a British colony after prior Spanish rule. The British are credited for having brought with them the intricate details of the rum-making and distilling process from Barbados, which was the hub of rum-making in the Caribbean. The rum-making process was fine-tuned in Jamaica and as a result, grew to the point that the industry began to thrive.

There was a slump after the rum boom as various factors slowed the growth of the rum industry in Jamaica. This includes the anti-slavery movement and the war between Britain and France. The decline was significant by the early 1900s with the number of distilleries decreasing from 148 in 1893 to around 25 in 1948. Though there are still fewer distilleries in Jamaica today as compared to the days of the industry boom, the quantity of rum on the island has grown exponentially. There’s also a much wider variety available that has helped Jamaican rum secure its place among the most well-known rums in the world.

Expert tip: If you’re over the age of 18, you’ll be able to try some of the premium Jamaica rums at Negril resorts and Ocho Rios resorts. Alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks are included for guests at Beaches Resorts in these areas.

What makes Jamaican rum so unique?

The way that Jamaica rum is produced is one of the things that makes it so unique. There are strict regulations for the production of rum on this island. This is not the reality for many other rum-producing countries, and these strict enforcements assist in maintaining the quality of Jamaican rums. In terms of production, this is overseen by the Jamaican government. There are legal processes in place to ensure that any rum claiming to be made in Jamaica was actually made in Jamaica.

Distilleries in Jamaica are allowed to mix up to 2.5% of another ingredient, like sugar, with their rums, in accordance with a law that applies throughout the Caribbean. This is done so that there is more flavor overall. Jamaican rum is manufactured by fermenting molasses in large casks called “puncheons,” and it is recognized for its robust flavor. It is distilled using a method that dates back to the 17th century and involves the use of pot stills. Jamaican rum, like other full-bodied rums, gets its signature flavor from a “wild” or natural fermentation process.

The government of Jamaica is in charge of both the certification of rum exports and the production of the molasses used in Jamaican rums. The latter (molasses) is produced in collaboration with privately owned mills in Jamaica before being sold to distilleries. In Jamaica, the stated ages of the rums produced are examined very carefully. To aid in this process, the government of Jamaica keeps tabs on each barrel as it ages in the country’s distilleries. This allows for the verification, through records, that the stated age of a bottle accurately reflects the youngest spirit contained therein rather than an average of all the ages of the spirits. All of these regulations help ensure that Jamaica rum is top quality.

Best rums in Jamaica

Some of the best rums in Jamaica include the Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum, the Worthy Park Estate Rum-Bar White Overproof Rum, the Hampden Estate Pure Single Rum 46% ABV, and the Appleton Estate 12-Year Old Rare Blend. Here’s what you need to know about the distilleries that produce these rums and the brands themselves:

Appleton Estate

One of Jamaica’s oldest and most recognizable sugar estates is Appleton Estate. After so many years in business, Appleton Estates has become the gold standard of Jamaican rum. If you’ve had any of the rums from this distillery, you know that they set a very high bar for themselves.

Best Jamaica Rums -- Sip On These Exotic Blends While Vacationing In Paradise

Joy Spence, Master Distiller, has been in charge of the Appleton distillery since 1997. Due to its “cane-to-cocktail” philosophy, Appleton handles every step of the production process, from cultivating and harvesting sugarcane to distilling, maturing, and blending rum from start to finish on its own premises. This estate offers a wide variety of rums, including their signature rum, as well as rums aged 8-, 12-, 15-, and 21- years, with occasional limited edition blends.

In Jamaica, not only can you sample Appleton rum, but you can also visit the estate where it is produced. The Appleton Rum tour is among the most popular rum tours available on this island. You’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at rum manufacturing and learn about the numerous steps involved in its production. You’ll also be able to purchase your favorite rum from Appleton Estate to take home with you.

Insider tip: Guests of Beaches and Sandals Resorts can enjoy Appleton Rum with their all-inclusive vacation! As long as you’re 18 or older, you’ll be able to indulge at one of the many bars or swim-up bars in these resorts.

Wray and Nephew

Wray and Nephew is considered the sister brand of Appleton Estate. This brand dates back to 1825 and was started by John Wray. Wray was a bar owner and businessman and his concept was further developed by his nephew, Charles Ward, an entrepreneur, in 1860. The brand is named after Wray and his nephew.

If you’re searching for the perfect overproof white rum to try while in Jamaica, you can start off by sampling Wray and Nephew. Their white rum is one of the most popular rums in Jamaica. A taste of Wray and Nephew mixed in with a little water or grapefruit soda is a popular combination for their white rum. The Wray and Nephew overproof white rum has a whopping 63% alcohol. As it is quite potent, this certainly is not a rum that you’re going to want to shoot.

While in Jamaica, you’ll be able to find Wray and Nephew rum at most bars and rum shops. Wray and Nephew is one of the largest exporters in the Caribbean and their products are available in and out of Jamaica. If you go to Appleton Estate during your Jamaica vacation, you’ll be able to learn more about Wray and Nephew and even purchase some to take home with you.

Blackwell Rum

Blackwell Rum was founded by Chris Blackwell of Island Records, a multi-national record label. Creators of this rum promise a taste of Jamaica with their products which are distilled, blended, and bottled by Wray & Nephew in the style of an old family rum recipe. Blackwell’s mother is said to have owned Wray & Nephew and Appleton Estate at one point.

According to the creator, Blackwell Rum is a rum that “celebrates Jamaica, my friendships, and also my family legacy.” In terms of flavor, you can expect warm vanilla tones combined with the burnt taste of sugar and molasses. You can drink this rum on the rocks, or you can have it included as part of a well-mixed cocktail in Jamaica.

Worthy Park Rum

Jamaican rum is well-known around the world for its distinct flavor and high quality and Worthy Park is one of the producers responsible for this accolade. The Worthy Park Estate where this rum is produced is located in Lluidas Vale. This is an area that is surrounded by mountain ranges and lush and fertile terrain. Lluidas Vale is in the central parish of St. Catherine which is known for its traditional Jamaican rum.

Worthy Park Estate is about a 50-minute drive from Kingston and Ocho Rios. This estate has been producing rum since 1655. As there was an over-supply of Jamaica Rum after World War II, production was stopped in 1962 when an agreement was made with the Spirits Pool Association of Jamaica.

The distillery at Worthy Park Estate was established in 2005 when the estate re-opened for business. Worthy Park Estate has an extensive line of rum that includes Worthy Park Single Estate Reserve, the Worthy Park Special Cask Series, Worthy Park 109 Proof, Rum-Bar Rum, and others. While in Jamaica, you can take a tour of the Worthy Park Estate distillery. You’ll need to book a tour here in advance.

Rum-Bar Rum

Rum-Bar Rum is a premium White Overproof Rum made in Jamaica. Established in 2007, this rum is made by Worthy Park Estate in Saint Catherine Parish, Jamaica. The Rum-Bar Rum brand has three different types of rum including Silver, Gold, and White Overproof — all of these varieties are distilled in copper pot stills from Scotland.

Rum-Bar’s Gold Rum stands out as it is aged for at least four years in bourbon barrels. This is done in order to mellow out the apple and banana flavors of the rum with notes of vanilla. An interesting product to try from this brand is their Rum Cream which is a blend of their White Overproof rum and heavy cream. Once you try this drink, you just might be convinced it is exactly what’s been missing from your after-dinner coffee collection.

Hamilton Rum

Worthy Park Estate also produces Hamilton Rum. Ed Hamilton, a well-known rum importer and author, created this rum. According to the rum’s history, Hamilton Rum was created after some research into the needs of bartenders, bar owners, and liquor store owners across the United States. As a result, several distinct Jamaica rums were created, including Jamaican Pot Still Black Rum, Jamaican Pot Still Gold Rum, and Jamaican Pimento Dram. Hamilton manufactures and imports rums from all over the Caribbean.

You should try Hamilton’s Black Rum if you’re looking for something with a more intense aroma and more pronounced flavor. This rum’s noticeable banana and fruit flavor comes from the double-strength black sugar-based caramel used in its production. Lighter in color and taste, Gold Rum features pineapple and citrus undertones. This flavor is made with gold-tint caramel. While in Jamaica, you should also try the liqueur Pimento Dram. This option combines Jamaican Pimento, also known as allspice pot still rum, and raw sugar. The end result is a product that adds a unique twist to punches and rum cocktails.

Myers’s Rum

Fred L. Myers founded Myer’s Rum in Kingston, Jamaica in 1879. This is one of the family-owned quality rums available in Jamaica that has achieved international acclaim. The Myers family says this rum ‘represents over 140 years of authentic rum heritage, pride, and history’. This rum is made with pure Jamaican molasses and it is distilled continuously in pot stills before maturing in white oak barrels. Once that part of the process is complete, the rum is meticulously blended to achieve a distinct color, aroma, and flavor.

There's a lot of work that goes into making this rum, so it’s no surprise that it’s a fan favorite in Jamaica. The Platinum White rum from Myers’ is also good, but the Original Dark rum is where the brand’s popularity really lies. Notes of caramel, honey, and dark chocolate can be found in the dark rum’s flavor profile. Myers’s Rum is widely available in Jamaica in bars around the island.

Hampden Estate

Hampden Estate is located in Trelawny Parish in the northwest of Jamaica. This is one the oldest sugar estates in Jamaica and it is one of those that you will be able to tour while there. Hampden Estate is the only distillery on this island that specializes exclusively in the making of heavy pot still rums.

Getting a little deeper into the rum-making process at Hampden Estate, the rum here is made with wild fermentation, natural spring water, and in pot stills. The end product is rums that have a distinctly funky flavor due to their high levels of esters which is a chemical compound that’s a result of the fermentation process.

Though there are a couple of products made at Hampden Estate, the brand’s flagship rum is the Hampden Estate Pure Single. This is an 84-proof variety that has notes of nearly overripe tropical fruits, smoke, and spices.

Monymusk Plantation Rums

Monymusk Plantation Rums is run by the National Rums of Jamaica. Located in the parish of Clarendon, Jamaica, this is a joint venture between a branch of the Jamaican government and two private companies. Monymusk rums are produced at Clarendon distillery — this is a large, modern distillery that is also partially owned by Captain Morgan’s parent company.

This plantation has been in operation since 1655 and it is one of the oldest in Jamaica. Monymusk produces several rums including a few that are available in the United States such as Special Gold Rum, Classic Gold Rum, and Special Reserve. Each of these rums is aged in American oak barrels for at least two years.

The Gold rums produced by Monymusk are full of orange, fruit, and caramel. If you’re thinking about trying them in Jamaica, keep in mind that the Special Gold is the lighter and sweeter of the two. The Special Reserve rum has an extended aging period of ten years and it is complete with tastes of rich vanilla, spice, and caramel. This rum is smooth and can be sipped on its own or on the rocks.

Try the best rum in Jamaica on your vacation!

With a long history of rum production, it's no surprise that Jamaica is recognized for the rum it produces today. This island is home to a number of rum distilleries, many of which offer tours. Whether you opt to take a distillery tour on your visit or simply drink on a blend of local rum while lounging on the beach at an all-inclusive resort, these brands have multiple options you just might want to bring home to remember your time in Jamaica.

The history of Fern Gully

The area where Fern Gully exists today was once a riverbed. As history tells it, the gorge here was one of the eight flowing rivers in the Ocho Rios area. There has always been dense, canopy-like rainforest in this area that covered this riverbed. It is said that after an earthquake in 1907, the river stopped flowing and pretty much disappeared. Over time, the riverbed transitioned into the paved road that exists today. Fern Gully’s popularity has a lot to do with the wide variety of plant life that literally lines the road.

Beach Vacation Vs Road Trip: Which Is Better For Your Family?

The excitement of a trip with the family is unparalleled. Of course, even before you get to the enjoyable part, you’ll need to make a choice about where to go. Fortunately, there is no shortage of potential holiday destinations, particularly for those seeking a beach getaway or a road trip.

Beach Vacation Vs Road Trip: Which Is Better For Your Family?

If ultimately what you’re trying to decide is whether something simple like a road trip or a tropical beach vacation would be best for you, then there are a couple of questions you might want to ask yourself. Among these are, would you prefer to pack up your car and hit the open road with family? Or do you want to enjoy relaxing for days on end on white, sandy beaches? While these are completely different experiences, both can involve exploring new places and having a great time with the people you love most.

To help you decide, we’ve unpacked what both of these vacation experiences entail in this post. Hopefully, once you’re done reading, you’ll be more than ready to make a decision on where and when to go!

Expert tip: Want to vacation but not sure what to do? Take a look at these Spring break vacation ideas for families and multi-generational vacation ideas for a vacation that’s fun for all!

What’s the difference between a trip and a vacation?

Usually, a trip is shorter than a vacation and it typically involves a planned agenda. An agenda would be useful in this case to make the most of a shorter getaway. Trips are more likely to be purpose-driven with new experiences being a central focus.

Most of the time, vacations center on rest and relaxation. The main purpose tends to be escaping from the regular day-to-day in order to find some measure of rejuvenation, so you can return to regular daily life refreshed. Vacations tend to be longer than trips and may be more spontaneous as there’s more time to get to the things you want to do. Whether you'd prefer something more laid back or super active, the type of vacation you go on is entirely up to you.

Trips and vacations both have their benefits. If you're planning on getting away for some time, you’ll need to decide which of these is best for you. Your decision might depend on how much time you have at your disposal, and what your overall objective is. Knowing who will be coming along for the adventure can help you to make this decision as well. You can choose from a variety of trips and vacations, including road trips and beach vacations.

Expert tip: First family vacation? We totally get that you want everything to be absolutely perfect! Ahead of your trip, take a look at our ultimate family beach vacation packing list which can serve as a helpful guide. If you’ll be heading to the beach our list of fun family beach games may also come in handy!

Travelling: Beach vacation vs road trip

The attraction of the wide, open road might be difficult to resist with a road trip. The vistas along the way, the freedom to stop whenever and wherever you choose, and the opportunity to explore new terrain are all things that contribute to the thrill and excitement of this experience. Having a great group of people to travel with and interesting places to visit along the way can make your road trip even more fun. Although a road trip is not the same as relaxing on a beach, it may still be a great experience if properly planned.

Beach vacations, on the other hand, involve beach time and lots of it. If you’re planning a beach vacation, one of the first things you’ll probably do is seek out a resort. Staying at an all-inclusive resort is ideal for this kind of trip because your accommodation, food, drinks, and activities are all included in one price. So instead of worrying about what to do or where to eat, you can relax and enjoy your trip. Stunning beach vacation spots abound in the Caribbean, which is just a couple hours from some U.S. states like Florida. For this reason, traveling to your holiday spot can be a lot quicker than if you were driving there.

Depending on where you live in the United States, a beach vacation may take less time to get to than a road trip destination. Before determining which choice is ideal for you, consider who will be traveling with you and how long of a trip they are willing to take.

Planning: Beach vacation vs road trip

The best thing about a road trip is that you can see and do so much! Planning is essential for road trips, especially because it can be difficult to figure things out once you’re on the road. When traveling with a large group of people, such as several generations of family members, it may be important to plan extra stops so that everyone has something to do. You should also consider where you will stay along the route and ensure that everyone has what they require.

If you want to go to great restaurants on a road trip, you might choose a location where there are many restaurants that you and your travel party enjoy. You can also choose a spot near beaches, historical sites, or even a city where you’ll be able to go on tours or visit popular music locations.

Planning is important when going on a beach vacation as well. You will need to select the destination for starters. It's a good idea to look for somewhere with amazing beaches, great weather, and suitable resorts as well. Once you decide on where to go, you’ll need to figure out what to pack, and what activities you want to do once you get there. Once you make up your mind, you’ll be ready to book your trip. If you decide to stay at an all-inclusive resort for your beach vacation, you’ll be able to enjoy a vacation with everything you need in one place, including an amazing beach!

Food and drinks: Beach vacation vs road trip

The advantage of a road trip is that there are numerous locations to stop for food and drinks along the way. This means that depending on where you go, you can get a wide variety of cuisines from restaurants or cafés selling fast food or fine dining. If food is essential to you, consider a city or town that is well-known for its culinary offerings. Drinks are also vital, so make sure there are some decent cocktail bars or juice bars around!

Beach Vacation Vs Road Trip: Which Is Better For Your Family?

An all-inclusive resort is a terrific choice for great meals and drinks on a beach trip. Food and beverages are typically included in your all-inclusive package, so you can get anything you need on-site. Beaches Resorts provide guests with a variety of eateries, including gourmet options. This resort’s restaurants serve food from all around the world so you’ll have a wide variety of cuisines available as well. Swim-up bars for both children and adults are available at these resorts as well.

Expert tip: If your resort has many restaurants on offer, ask about whether reservations are required once you arrive. Some of the busier restaurants tend to fill up quickly, so you might need to book these in advance.

Beaches: Beach vacation vs road trip

Depending on where you live, it might be possible to plan a road trip that includes some beach time. If you drive along the coast, you’ll be able to visit as many beaches as you want. This type of road trip appeals to all age groups, as checking out scenic beaches and other interesting sights and attractions along the coast can be truly refreshing. If you decide to embark on a road trip in the U.S. that includes visits to beaches, you’ll have to plan carefully when you go. The best time to do this is during the warmer months so you’ll at least be able to soak in some sun.

Beach Vacation Vs Road Trip: Which Is Better For Your Family?

If you really want some beach fun, a Caribbean beach vacation is an awesome idea. This region has sunny weather year-round, which means you have a wider span of time to be able to take your vacation. A beach vacation on the islands can be a fun adventure, especially if you’ll be traveling with kids. In Jamaica, you can explore the popular Seven Mile Beach in Negril, and while in Turks & Caicos, you definitely won’t want to miss out on a chance to explore Grace Bay Beach. Grace Bay Beach has been voted ‘best beach in the world’ and there are many great resorts located in this area too, such as Beaches Turks & Caicos.

In terms of the beaches, if you want a really great beach experience, you might want to go with an all-inclusive beach vacation. These types of vacations specifically cater to families who love the beach, and you can also find golf resorts and water park resorts near great beaches as well.

Things to do: Beach vacation vs road trip

There’s no limit to the things you’ll be able to do on a road trip. Naturally, what you’ll have access to depends on where you go, but generally, there are lots of stops you can make en route to do the things that you enjoy on a road trip. While planning your road trip, make room on your itinerary (if you have one) to do activities and visit attractions that appeal to you and the rest of your travel party. In addition to the things you may have listed while exploring and driving around, you might find even more interesting places to stop along the way. As a lot of driving goes into a road trip, you’ll need to plan this carefully to ensure you have time to do the things at the top of your list.

Beach Vacation Vs Road Trip: Which Is Better For Your Family?

A beach vacation requires slightly less planning than a road trip. This is because other than booking your trip, all you’ll need to do is perhaps book some excursions, and ensure your schedule is free enough to make the most of your vacation. Most beach resorts are located in touristy areas which means there will be plenty to do on and off your resort. Some of the things you might get up to on a beach vacation include water sports, golfing, and simply relaxing by the ocean or having fun at a water park if this is included in your resort. Compared to a road trip, beach vacations don’t usually involve much driving at all — unless you choose to.

Expenses: Beach vacation vs road trip

It may at first seem as though a road trip could be the least expensive option when compared to a beach vacation. This is a common misconception as many people do not factor in the expenses that might come up along the way on a road trip. These expenses include fuel and everything associated with the stops you might make along the way for food, drinks, snacks, entertainment and even shopping. As these expenses tend to add up over time, you might end up spending a lot more on your road trip than you might have bargained for.

All things considered, a road trip can be more expensive than, or at least comparable to, a beach holiday. This depends on where you go of course, but it is undeniably true that beach vacations, particularly all-inclusive beach holidays, can help you stay within your vacation budget. Food, drinks, and activities are all included in the amount you pay at all-inclusive resorts, so there are no unpleasant surprises. You can also pre-book tours and excursions so that you can factor them in early on. Beaches Resorts in the Caribbean, for example, provide a variety of eateries to guests, including gourmet options, so you can get all you need right at your resort!

Expert tip: If you have your heart set on a road trip, it's important to set a budget and keep a close eye on your expenses. If you’d rather not have to do accounting as you vacation, an all-inclusive vacation might be a better option for you.

Beach vacation vs road trip — Decision made!

At least we hope that at this point, you’d be that much closer to making a decision on your next vacation! Road trip or beach vacation, what will it be? With all of the facts presented, the final decision will truly depend on how you’d prefer to spend your time, and which option is truly best for you and your travel party.

Beach Vacation Vs Road Trip: Which Is Better For Your Family?

If you want a relaxing vacation with a lot less planning (and driving!), you might want to go for an all-inclusive beach vacation. There are plenty of locations you can choose from for this type of vacation, but for consistently warm weather, stunning beaches, and great all-inclusive resorts, the Caribbean stands out in this regard. Turks & Caicos resorts, Negril resorts, and Ocho Rios resorts are all great options for all-inclusive family vacations. A vacation at any of these resorts is sure to be memorable for your entire family!

Expert tip: If you’re heading to Jamaica with your family or a group of friends inclusive of children, you might want to take a look at our list of things to do in Jamaica with kids. A look inside the Malone family’s vacation to Beaches Turks & Caicos with quadruplets on the spectrum.

The Power of Letting Go

Walk into the Columbus, Georgia, home of Team Malone on a weekday. Watch out for the shoes scattered around the mudroom like popcorn spilled from a bag. The sign on one wall is more of a proud declaration than a warning: “Welcome to our messy, crazy, beautiful life.”

“That’s who we are,” says Miss Gina, the mother figure who also refers to herself as Team Malone’s ringleader. The team consists of five boys (six if you include the father, Big Mike). The oldest son, 19-year-old Little Mike, is a student at Stanford. The other four are quadruplets: Chase, Dylan, Sean, and William. They’re 15 years old and keep the mudroom living up to its name. Each has his own interest and individual gift. They have one more thing in common aside from their last name: they’re on the autism spectrum.

The Power of Letting Go

Picture: The Malone Family at Beaches Turks & Caicos.

“Physically they’re fine,” Big Mike says. “They just happen to have mental challenges.”

He affectionately calls them “the guys.” Adults and Little Mike have spent the past 15 years keeping them safe and helping them negotiate life. Chase and William need detailed structure, or they might fall apart. Dylan can be oppositional. Sean has echolalia. Big Mike explains: “If you ask him, ‘What’s your name?’ he repeats it back: ‘What’s your name?’”

This is everyday life for parents and caretakers of those with autism.

“It’s like trying to figure out the combination to a lock,” Big Mike says, “You keep at it in hopes of experiencing a breakthrough. And it takes help.”

But help isn’t easy to find. Parents certainly don’t expect to find it on an island, an ocean away from home. This is why Big Mike and Miss Gina still sound as if they’re in a state of amazement, several weeks after traveling to Beaches Turks & Caicos. There, they found a happy squad of IBCCES-certified Beaches Buddies to match up with the guys, the Caribbean’s first autism-friendly kids camp, and moment-to-moment proof of why Beaches Resorts, with three locations in Turks & Caicos and Jamaica, is the first resort company in the world to earn designations as an Advanced Certified Autism Center (ACAC).

The Power of Letting Go

Picture: The quadruplets playing on the splash pad at Beaches Turks & Caicos with their Beaches Buddies - professional caretakers who have received autism training and provide one-on-one private care for an additional fee.

The Beaches team, it turns out, were not simply “helpers.” They were experts at everything Team Malone had struggled to find for 15 years. They became trusted friends. And now, at home, the messiness of life … doesn’t seem so messy. Team Malone is more relaxed than ever. They’ve even become closer.

“I keep thinking, ‘Lord, please take us back to Beaches,’” Miss Gina says.

Their minds do go back daily. To the ocean from your dreams. To the freedom. And to the moment when someone tapped Big Mike on the elbow so he could hear one son, who had never in 15 years spoken a recognizable word, said this: “Dad.”

“It sounds too good to be true,” Big Mike says. “People ask, ‘How did this happen?’ I say, ‘Sit down. Let me tell you the story.’”

First, Big Mike says, you need to understand what it’s like for Team Malone to travel — or not travel. “People like us might travel locally on occasion, but it isn’t always a positive experience.”

Those past experiences made Big Mike reluctant when a possible trip to Beaches Turks & Caicos was first mentioned. He hadn’t yet found about Beaches’ Sensory Guides, the one-of-a-kind online resource that would allow guests to rate on a scale of 1-10 any sensory sensitivities to stimuli like noise, touch, taste, smell, and sight, in all areas of the resort. He hadn’t talked with a Beaches’ Culinary Concierge to plan specific meals — gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian, low-sugar — if necessary. He didn’t know about Julia, the Sesame Street character who’s so relatable because she’s also on the spectrum and does arts and crafts with children when not walking around at Beaches Resorts.

The Power of Letting Go

Picture: The quadruplets enjoy a painting activity alongside Sesame Street’s Julia, a 4-year-old girl on the spectrum.

At first, Big Mike said to Miss Gina, “Remember how traveling has gone in the past?”

They had visited family in the Hamptons a few times. “The family is great,” Big Mike says, “but we could always sense anxiety toward the guys. It’s hard to know how to handle their challenges.”

Two years ago, they tried a short getaway to the beaches of the Carolinas. William wandered off soon after they arrived. “He was gone for forty-five minutes,” Big Mike says. “It made the entire trip uncomfortable.”

Still, Miss Gina had a different feeling about the training of the Beaches team. Why else would they insist that Team Malone would be just fine, without a hint of hesitation? When Big Mike said, “This is not one or two small children on the spectrum; these are four strong teenage boys who get lost and don’t communicate easily,” a Beaches representative reminded him they’d been hosting families just like his longer than anyone in the world.

The Power of Letting Go

Big Mike wondered if they’d be able to find handlers to travel with them — people hired to give Big Mike and Miss Gina extra help.

“You won’t need to bring handlers,” the Beaches team assured. “We’ve got this. We want you to come.”

They want us to come. Big Mike hadn’t heard those words very often. His own anxiety began to gently wash away. Miss Gina heard everything she needed to hear: a certain tone in those voices from Beaches Turks and Caicos.

“They sounded … genuine,” she says.

When Team Malone boarded an American Airlines flight out of Atlanta, Big Mike and Miss Gina braced themselves for a test or two, or four. The Beaches and American reps made sure their seats were together. They would not be subjected to impatient passengers or stern flight attendants. In fact, American Airlines also has a program designed to help special needs flyers, from arrival at the airport through to the plane’s landing.

“It made the flight easier than I expected,” Big Mike says. After descending toward the white sands and turquoise waters of Turks and Caicos, the guys stepped off the plane and into the smiles of the Beaches staff.

“It’s great to see you, William. Hello Chase! Let’s get you some snacks, Dylan and Sean.” The bond began. They hadn’t even left the airport and yet Big Mike began to see evidence of the training of the Beaches staff, who have received Level II certification in autism and have completed more than 40 credit hours on autism sensitivity and awareness, centered on communication, motor skills, social skills, environment awareness, emotional awareness, early childhood identification, transition to adulthood, and more.

Little Mike saw it, too. To minimize downtime, American made sure his flight from California arrived within 15 minutes of everyone else’s. He’d been apprehensive about the trip until he noticed the pure joy and the calm all around him.

“He was like me,” says Big Mike, “wondering if the other shoe would drop.”

On a soft, sandy island like Turks and Caicos, there is no other shoe to drop. As Team Malone pulled up to the Beaches lobby, they felt as if they’d arrived on Fantasy Island. Everyone was so welcoming. Everyone was so happy. Everyone was so … real.

The guys were thirsty. Before Big Mike could make a move, several Beaches teammates said, “Come with us, guys. Let us show you what we have.”

Big Mike followed them to the drink stand to see how long the good vibe would continue. Lemonade? Yes. Fresh tropical punch? Absolutely.

“They wanted to mix up concoctions,” Big Mike says, “and I’d start to say the word they’ve heard their entire lives: ‘No, no. That doesn’t go together.’ The staff would calmly say, ‘It’s OK. Trust us.’”

The Power of Letting Go

The guys were learning the Beaches language. Words like “can’t” and “don’t” are virtually nonexistent. Even the word “no” had a different sound to it.

“When the staff did say ‘no,’ their beautiful accents and calm demeanor made it sound like a wonderful invitation rather than a negative response,” says Miss Gina.

It meant as much to Big Mike as it did to the guys. At home, he’ll watch through the windows to make sure they make it back to the mudroom. He needed a day at Beaches to stop being a helicopter parent. He needed to stop being the parent in the bushes.

“For parents in this kind of situation, it’s like riding a wave with a boogie board,” he says. “You get on top and it's the coolest thing, but you’re wondering, ‘When am I going to hit something? When is this ride going to stop?’ It didn’t stop on this trip.”

He and Miss Gina would go to Dino’s, Barefoot by the Sea, or one of the 21 restaurants on property, partly to eat and partly to check on the guys.

The Power of Letting Go

“Oh, they were here 20 minutes ago,” the hostess would say. They’d stop by The Jerk Shack. “Dylan? Sean? Yes, of course. They came by at their usual time, on their way to the beach.”

The entire staff, with their advanced certified autism training, did not blink. They never stopped smiling. They used their personalities and training to allow Big Mike and Gina to retreat to the peace of a cabana, though Big Mike couldn’t resist the urge to get up to see if the guys were OK at the waterpark. And there they were, up on the highest slide, enjoying a new view and splashing around at the water pad.

The Power of Letting Go

“This staff has everything under control,” Miss Gina would say. “Let them go.”

The Power of Letting Go

By letting go of the guys, they were also letting go of themselves. By midweek they were discreetly looking around the ice cream truck and the mac-and-cheese truck near the waterpark. Not to see if the guys were there, but to make sure they weren’t there. Then they’d wade into the water, climb the slides, and play. Just the two of them.

The Power of Letting Go

“Let's go get our big kid on,” Miss Gina says.

Then they went back to the cabana as adults and ordered glasses of champagne.

“Actually,” Miss Gina said, “you can leave the bottle, please.”

The freedom also took hold of Little Mike in a way he didn’t anticipate. For the first couple days, he toggled between finishing a paper for school on the patio of Team Malone’s villa and keeping an eye on his brothers. At some point, it became clear to him the Beaches staff had everything under control. He could hang out at the pools with other college-age guests. One afternoon, he and Miss Gina went for a walk on the beach.

“They hadn’t spent much time together because he went to college shortly after his mother passed away,” Big Mike says. “Something happened on that walk. He finally relaxed his mind and realized, ‘OK, she’s the real deal.’”

The Power of Letting Go

“The relaxing environment at Beaches makes milestones possible,” Miss Gina says, “and we had a lot of them.”

William, who had been averse to wearing anything on his head, put on a Turks and Caicos hat and kept it there. And then one day, the Beaches team invited Team Malone to a festival.

“Are you sure?” Big Mike asked. “All seven of us? That doesn’t happen at home.”

“Of course. You are family. Come with us.”

They all went to the festival as a unified team, to enjoy Caribbean music, local foods, and each other in a way they hadn’t done before arriving in Turks and Caicos. In the middle of it all, Big Mike felt a Beaches teammate tugging on his arm. He turned and saw William looking back at him, with his mouth moving.

“I’ve never heard him say anything that I can recognize,” Big Mike says. “Never.”

The Beaches teammate told him to lean in and listen. So, Big Mike fixed his fatherly eyes and ears on his son as a single word spilled into the island air.

“Dad.”

A week of yesses had unlocked another milestone, a forever moment. “The bar is set high in terms of where we go next or how we travel.”

“They backed up what they said they would do,” Big Mike says of the Beaches team before slightly correcting himself. “Actually … they did more. They changed us.”

He and Miss Gina look out their kitchen window with distant thoughts and new perspectives. This is not the end of Team Malone’s crazy, messy, beautiful story. It's only the beginning.

The Power of Letting Go

In Jamaica, Christmas is hands down one of the most popular holidays. This is truly a festive and special time of year and families on the island really get into the celebration. During the holiday season in Jamaica, radio stations will play carols all day long, and many families spruce up their homes and start planning Christmas lunches and other celebrations. Though most of the locals enjoy simply spending Christmas at home, there are quite a few Christmas traditions on this island that visitors can enjoy while being out and about. We’ve listed some of the most popular below:

1. Christmas Eve Grand Market

There are various Christmas traditions you can look forward to experiencing if you travel to Jamaica during the holiday season. One of these involves visiting the popular Grand Market, commonly referred to as “Gran’ Market” by the locals. This lively event happens on Christmas Eve and usually takes place in all of the major towns in Jamaica.

Children can look forward to seeing Santa Claus at the Gran’ Market festival and lots of bounce houses too. Shopping is a big part of this vibrant holiday experience, which is something the entire family can enjoy. This means you’ll be able to pick up some last-minute presents if you need to. Within the festivities, you’ll find vendors selling a variety of items, and stores in the area tend to offer sales specials at this time as well.

Some of the items you might find for sale at Gran’ Market include toys, Christmas decorations, apparel, household items, and more. Many of the sellers import things specifically to display and sell at this event, so you really can expect to find a wide variety of merchandise. In addition to shopping, you can look forward to enjoying local music and entertainment at this event as well. You’ll find sound systems set up around stores and malls, and even street dancers in some areas. The dancing acts tend to be on display right up until Christmas Day.

Good to know: Gran’ Market typically starts in the morning and spans the entire day. Even with that said, most people leave around 6 p.m. Definitely go to Gran’ Market expecting crowds, especially if you go later in the day.

2. Jamaican Christmas Pantomime

The Jamaican Pantomime is a Christmas tradition that has been around since the 1940s. Lovers of international folk culture will appreciate being a part of this event while in Jamaica. Jamaican Pantomime is basically a showcase of local songs and dances that pay homage to Jamaica's history and culture or parody current events and well-known individuals. Going back to the start, Jamaican Pantomime has its beginnings with classic children’s fairy stories, which evolved over time into more dramatic entertainment pieces. This would always happen at Christmastime, and continues to be the case so many years later.

Jamaica Pantomime serves as a source of entertainment for tens of thousands of people, and it helps to conserve folk culture on this island as well. This event usually includes a cast and a storyline that is quite vivid and engaging. Onstage, the narrative is brought to life in the most relatable and memorable way. These plots are a big part of what makes the event a must-see on the Jamaican holiday festivities calendar.

Good to know: Aside from entertainment, there are many incredible things Jamaica is known for that you’ll love about this island. That list includes the island’s luxurious resorts like Negril resorts and Ocho Rios Jamaica resorts which are located next to stunning beaches!

3. Jonkonnu (or Junkanoo) Street Parade

On several islands, Jonkonnu, sometimes known as Junkanoo, is a popular Christmas, Boxing Day, or New Year's Day event. Jamaica is one of the English-speaking Caribbean islands that participate in this street masquerade event. Celebrations of Jonkonnu are typically held in rural areas of Jamaica, such as Portland, Westmoreland, and St. Thomas. Some people find this masquerade very fun, while others find it quite terrifying.

The origins of Jonkonnu's name are unclear, but there are a few clues as to where it might have come from. Some say the event was named after John Canoe, a west African king from the 18th century. Others suggest the name comes out of a mispronunciation of the French phrase, gens inconnu, which means “unknown people". The latter argument is supposed to be owing to the impossibility to identify participants in the celebration due to masks and costumes. In any case, this is one of the island's oldest celebrations, claimed to have been observed by enslaved Africans on the three holidays that they were allowed to have.

Jonkonnu has both African and English masquerade and mumming traditions. You can expect to see a dancing band of masqueraders and costumed figures performing in the various towns and villages if you attend this event while in Jamaica. This is more common around the holidays. Characters in the masquerade include the King and Queen, Cow Head, Horse Head, Pitchy Patchy, and Belly Woman. A musical ensemble that includes one or more drums, a bamboo fife, and other blowing instruments, such as a cow horn or a conch shell, are usually part of the parade. A grater scraped with a fork is also used as a Jonkonnu musical instrument, which is more unconventional but nonetheless completely traditional in this situation.

4. Traditional Christmas breakfast

Food is a central focus in Christmas traditions around the world and Jamaica is no exception. Throughout the day there are various Christmas traditions that are observed at meal times on this island. This includes breakfast -- a typical Jamaica Christmas breakfast/brunch can include ackee and saltfish, breadfruit, fried plantains, boiled bananas, freshly squeezed fruit juice, and tea. Christmas breakfast in Jamaica brings out some of the best national dishes and other tasty treats of this island and it is definitely worth experiencing.

5. Traditional Christmas dinner

In Jamaica, traditional Christmas meals are something to be anticipated just as much as getting presents. A most popular meal at this time of year is dinner, as around Christmastime this meal tends to be made in a special way. Traditional Jamaican Christmas dinner typically includes ham, oven-baked chicken, curried goat, oxtail, and fish. Based on the menu, these items would be cooked in various Jamaican styles.

There is usually a variety of food included in the traditional Jamaican Christmas dinner, but special attention is usually paid to the ham. Many Jamaicans widely report that Christmas would be incomplete without ham. Making holiday ham is an intricate and often time-consuming process. Once it is cooked, this popular dish is usually topped with pineapple, cherries, and cloves.

The side dishes are important too. In true Jamaican fashion, rice and peas (rice mixed with red kidney beans) has a prominent place on the Christmas dinner table. At Christmas time, this dish might be made with gungo (pigeon) peas as opposed to kidney beans. Fresh gungo peas are available mostly during the month of December. If you’re on the island during this time, it presents a great opportunity to learn how to make this and other delicious Jamaican dishes.

6. Christmas drinks and desserts

Christmas is one time of year when it will certainly be worth your while to leave some room for dessert. In Jamaica, there are lots of Christmas drinks and desserts that you might want to try during the holiday season. Sorrel is a popular holiday beverage that has some nutritional benefits as well. Sorrel is made with the roselle, a type of hibiscus flower, which is native to West Africa. This flower is said to have been brought to Jamaica during the slavery era. To make this drink, the roselle is dried, then boiled with ginger. Spices like Jamaican pimento are usually added in along with some form of sweetener. Sometimes Jamaican white rum is added to sorrel at Christmastime for a festive touch. Sorrel is best served cold, so you can wait for it to cool down then grab a cup of ice to enjoy.

While you probably won't have time to prepare your own sorrel during your holiday, keep in mind that this is something you can often enjoy at local Jamaican restaurants during the Christmas season. Another popular drink on the island during the holidays is Jamaican Guinness punch. Guinness Stout, Supligen, condensed milk, essential spices, and sometimes angostura bitters are included in this beverage.

Just as it is in other parts of the world, fruit cake is a popular Christmastime dessert in Jamaica. This sweet treat will definitely be enjoyed by anyone with a sweet tooth. In Jamaica, fruit cake is made with special island flair and a whole lot of spices. A lot goes into the taste of a Jamaican fruit cake which can require up to a year of preparation that includes soaking the fruits. Pieces of fruit are steeped in Jamaican rum for flavor. White rum is also sometimes added to fruit cake for a kick. No worries though if you want to share some with the kids, you can get fruit cakes with and without alcohol in Jamaica during the holiday season.

7. Midnight Mass

Midnight Mass is a Christmas tradition for many people in Jamaica. This means that a number of families will attend special church services on Christmas Eve, typically after the Grand Market. Roman Catholic and Anglican churches are usually among the churches that host Midnight Mass. Other denominations, like Seventh Day Adventists, might have their special Christmas service earlier in the evening to usher in the day. Not all Jamaicans go to church on Christmas Eve though, some people just prefer to party all night and enjoy the festiveness of the season.

8. Caroling… the Jamaican Way

Christmas caroling is a part of the Jamaican Christmas tradition as well! To give the season a special local flavor, creative songs and lyrics are often on display during this time as well as some of the classics. As there are many local artists who have released Christmas albums over the years in Jamaica, there’s quite a lot to choose from when it comes to caroling material. Some popular Jamaican Christmas tunes include, “We Wish You An Irie Christmas” by Jacob Miller and Ray I, “Christmas Behind Bars” by Gregory Issacs, “Santa Ketch Up Inna Mango Tree” by Faith D’Aguilar, and more. As some of the popular songs are classics that were reworked and fitted with reggae beats, you won’t have a hard time falling into the rhythm.

Expert tip: If you want to enjoy some of the classic Christmas carols while in Jamaica, a special church service might be a good place to experience this.

9. Boxing Day

Boxing Day is the holiday after Christmas on Caribbean islands like Jamaica. This is a favorite holiday for many people. With Christmas Day and Boxing Day falling one after the other, people really get a chance to take a break and spend time with friends and family at this time. In Jamaica, residents usually spend Boxing Day either relaxing at home, having family lunches, or going to the beach.

For those who do choose to go out on Boxing Day, there are a few events happening around town including the opening pantomime. This is a well-attended event that marks the beginning of the national pantomime season. The pantomime as earlier mentioned is an annual production that highlights the customs, dance, music, costumes, and other aspects of Jamaica, in a vibrant way. The jovial pantomime season opens at 6 p.m. on Boxing Day.

On Boxing Day, some Jamaicans make a point of giving gifts or tips to the people who helped them throughout the years. Whether it be the postman, the newspaper delivery person, or perhaps even a helpful gas station attendant, locals often offer small gifts of gratitude around this time. Other than that, popular happenings in Jamaica on Boxing Day include horse racing and cricket.

10. Reuniting with family & friends

Christmas in Jamaica is all about spending time with those nearest and dearest to you. Whether that be friends or family, during Christmas time, Jamaicans usually make a point of ringing in the season with the people they care about. As such, with families especially, you’ll find quite a few reunions taking place at this time of year. As part of these celebrations, each family member will bring a dish — sort of like a potluck.

Sharing food and coming together is one of those time-honored Christmas traditions of Jamaica. In times past, it was common to find Jamaicans cooking for their neighbors around Christmas time and sharing food. People who lived deep in rural Jamaica are famous for this. In more recent times, people cook food on Christmas Day in anticipation of friends and family dropping by throughout the day. So essentially, people would be moving from house to house on Christmas Day, eating, drinking, and merry-making along the way.

11. Pepper Lights

At Christmastime in Jamaica, you can expect to find some homes and business places decorated with extravagant ornaments on the inside and outside. Some will also include festive curtains, tablecloths, place settings, and Christmas lights, which are also known as “pepper lights” on this island. Pepper lights are commonly seen adorning streets, villages, and trees, and they really add a special Christmas feel to just about any location.

12. Poinsettias

A sure sign that Christmas has arrived in Jamaica is the presence of poinsettias. This is a plant that is commonly incorporated into Christmas decor in many parts of the world. So significant are poinsettias to the Christmas season that there are several songs made about it by some Caribbean artists. Poinsettias originated in Mexico and the United States. The possible colors of this plant include red, cream, and orange. Real and artificial poinsettias are not usually hard to find around Christmastime. The most popular variation is the real red poinsettias, and these are sometimes given as gifts in Jamaica.

An Unforgettable Underground Adventure Awaits At Turks & Caicos’ Conch Bar Caves

The Turks & Caicos Islands (TCI) are known for many things including their amazing beaches with the most mesmerizing turquoise waters. One of these is Conch Bar Caves which is among the largest cave systems in the Caribbean. This natural attraction is located in Middle Caicos, in the Turks & Caicos islands.

Conch Bar Caves are a little way off from the village of Conch Bar on Middle Caicos. To get to these caves, you’ll need to follow a short dirt road that’s surrounded by brush — it won’t be hard to arrange a tour to get there while in this territory. As you near the cave you’ll need to traverse a walkway that is made of stone and fossilized coral. Only then will you find the entrance of what is today described as the largest above-ground cave system in the Lucayan Archipelago, which includes the islands of The Bahamas and Turks & Caicos.

As part of the Conch Bar cave system, you’ll find plenty to admire and explore including sinkholes, caves, and ‘blue holes’. Nature lovers will be fascinated by this experience as will those who just want a true island experience. Conch Bar Caves is a must-visit in the Turks & Caicos and we’ve put together a guide that will tell you everything you need to know about this attraction:

History of Conch Bar Caves:

Conch Bar Cave is a karst limestone cave system that is thought to have developed over time through the dissolution of soft limestone by slightly acidic water containing carbonic acid. This natural wonder has a fascinating history. The caves are said to have been inhabited by Indian tribes long before Christopher Columbus’ journey to this part of the globe.

Conch Bar Caves has been involved in the production of fertilizer in times past. Guano (bat excrement) mining was done here in the 1880s, and it was in high demand. Guano from the Conch Bar Caves was exported from Turks & Caicos during those years. It is claimed that Lucayan Indian relics and animal skeletons were discovered during the mining operation, but they were not saved. Fortunately, some artifacts survived and remain in the caves today. To this day, carved and painted names and dates from the guano mining period can be found inside the caves.

Good to know: At Conch Bar Caves, you might be able to purchase brochures that provide additional information about the vegetation and animal life you're likely to see in this area. Some of the costs generated here may go towards the preservation of this and other natural resources in the TCI.

What to expect at Conch Bar Caves:

Conch Bar Caves is a popular attraction in Turks & Caicos. This natural attraction consists of a network of limestone caves located in the Middle Caicos. Conch Bar Caves is a heritage site and this attraction includes the Conch Bar Cave system and the above-ground land in the general area. In the space where Conch Bar Caves are located, you’ll also find Village Hill and several nearby ponds that support diverse plant and animal populations.

You’ll definitely need a guide for this experience. There are strict rules concerning this to prevent damage and graffiti in the caves. No worries though, the tour is more fun with a guide as you can learn about the history of the cave and the various cave fauna and flora, including bats, crustaceans, and isopods. An intensive effort has been taken over the years to preserve and protect the caves and this will certainly be seen during your visit.

Walking through Conch Bar Caves can take between 45 minutes to an hour, sometimes a little longer. This all depends on how long you spend exploring the various areas. At Conch Bar Caves, just as soon as you set foot into the entry chamber, you’ll get a glimpse of just how large this cave system really is. There are various sections inside the cave and each section has a story connected to how it got its name. The sections/chambers inside the cave include the Christmas Room, Skylight Chamber, Bat City, and more. Some chambers inside the cave have small tidal lagoons which can be a fascinating sight.

As you make your way through the caves, turn your eyes upward for sightings of the resident bats in the crevices. Look out for stalactites and stalagmites as well as other cave formations. Keep in mind that Conch Bar Caves does not have developed paths, stairs, and lighting as is common with many other tourist attraction caves. Expect this to be an authentic, natural adventure, handheld flashlights included.

Good to know: Guides at Conch Bar Caves normally have extra flashlights that they can provide to you during the tour, but you can also bring your own if you wish.

Things to know before you go to Conch Bar Caves

Before heading to Conch Bar Caves, there are a few things to note including the admission price. Expect to pay around $20 USD per person for a ticket. Only cash is accepted on-site, so keep that in mind when preparing to head out on this excursion. If you want to pay by card then you’ll need to pre-book with the National Trust main office.

Getting to Conch Bar Caves

There are a few ways to get to Conch Bar Caves and lots of tour operators to take you there. You can start off with the Wonders of Turks & Caicos Island Routes tour which also includes visits to historical sites like Wade’s Green Plantation and the Kew Farm. The main attraction of this tour, though, is Conch Bar Caves. This is one of a handful of popular excursions in Turks & Caicos that include stopping off at several locations in one day.

As there are quite a few tour operators who facilitate trips to Middle Caicos for the Conch Bar Caves tours, you won’t have a hard time making arrangements to visit this attraction while on the islands. Once you book your tour you can be assured that the tour company will take care of all the details of this activity. If you book a tour to Conch Bar Caves through a resort like Beaches Resorts transportation to and from the tour location will usually be included.

Good to know: Beaches Resorts are among the most popular resorts for teens in the Caribbean. If you and your family will be staying at this resort while in Turks & Caicos, here are some exciting things to do in Turks & Caicos that everyone will love!

Rules to follow at Conch Bar Caves:

Tour guides are a must

Exploring Conch Bar Caves with a tour guide is a requirement. This is for the best as tour guides can help you have a more interactive and insightful experience. Tour guides in this area often share intricate stories about the caves and details on the various chambers as well.

Look but don’t touch

While exploring Conch Bar Caves, be sure to keep your hands to yourself. Do not touch the cave walls or formations for risk of damaging them. Your tour guide might remind you of this along the way. This is important as the oils and contaminants on human skin can decay the rock surface which in turn can disrupt the natural processes of cave development. This can be quite disastrous as the resident bats may also be affected by this, so better safe than sorry.

Safety first

The paths at Conch Bar Caves can sometimes be very slippery. As a result, you should give careful consideration to the shoes you wear for this experience. This isn’t a hard and fast rule, but it is very important for your own safety. Closed-toe shoes with good grip are the preferred option. Keep in mind that due to the sometimes slippery paths, this tour may not be suitable for small children. Additionally, don’t be afraid and run if you come across bats —they might be scary to some, especially children, but they’re pretty harmless.

Expert tip: If you'll be traveling to the Turks & Caicos with kids, take a look at these amazing things Turks & Caicos is known for and our handy Turks & Caicos packing list. What to take with you to Conch Bar Caves:

If you want to spend some time at Conch Bar Caves during your Turks & Caicos vacation, there are some things you might want to take with you. Here are the top items you won’t want to leave behind:

  • Cash — Bring enough money for incidentals (drinks, snacks, souvenirs, etc) plus tickets if you will be purchasing these upon arrival. As debit and credit cards may not be accepted at this site, you will need to have cash available.

  • Comfortable shoes — there’s a bit of walking involved with exploring Conch Bar Caves. As such, you'll need to wear comfortable shoes. The caves can be slippery as well so this will come in handy to help you keep your balance as well.

  • Water - Bringing water along on a tour of Conch Bar Caves is a good idea as there aren’t many amenities available on site. With a short walk, you might be able to access items like water that may not be available near the cave area -- ask your guide for directions if you’re not sure where to go. The best option though is to just bring your own water.

  • Hat- a hat can be useful for outdoor tours in the Turks & Caicos but keep in mind that you should not wear these inside the cave. Depending on the type of hat you’re wearing you might not be able to see the low ceiling overhead. To avoid any mishaps, like banging your head, wear your hat only when out of the caves.

If you stay on the island of Providenciales (also known as “Provo”), the capital of the Turks & Caicos Islands (TCI), during your vacation you can tour this brewery, sample its offerings, and find out more about the brewing process in Turks & Caicos. The more you know, the more you’ll be able to enjoy your cold and refreshing Caribbean beer on pristine white sands in the TCI. If you'll be headed to the Turks & Caicos soon, here’s what you can expect from a tour of the Turks Heads Brewery!

Expert tip: Vacationing soon in the Turks & Caicos? You might want to get familiar with some of the things Turks & Caicos is known for and things to do in Turks & Caicos. This can help you plan the best activities and places to go.

About Turks Head Brewery:

Turks Head Brewery is located in central Providenciales in the Turks & Caicos. Kicking off its operations formally in 2001, the Turks Head Brewery became the first brewery to operate in this territory. Today the brewery is co-owned by Serge Tuyssuzian and remains the only one in Turks & Caicos.

The Turks Head Brewery produces a wide variety of beers. That list includes lagers, ales, stouts, and pilsners. Popular beers produced at this brewery include Turk’s Head Lager, Turk’s Head Amber, Island Hopping Ale (IPA), and Turk's Head Lite (a light lager). There are some seasonal selections as well which include a stout that is often produced for St. Patrick’s Day.

In total, the Turks Head Brewery is estimated to produce more than 200 brews annually. This equates to over two million bottles of beer and lager. The lager produced by the Turks Head Brewery takes about five weeks to brew. The ales take less time and can be produced in about a week. When it comes to bottles, cans, and kegs for the taps, these are all produced in-house at the Turks Head Brewery as well. It is easy to recognize brews made at Turks Head as these have the Turks Head Cactus logo which includes a beach background.

The beer produced by the Turks Head Brewery is mostly barley-derived. The grains are imported from the United States and Germany. The hops, five different types, are imported from the Pacific Northwest and New Zealand primarily, as well as some other countries. Hops are known to add flavor, aroma, and bitterness to beer so these ingredients are pretty much staples to the creation of Turks Head Brewery products. Turks Head Brewery, which recently expanded to include two brewers, plans to add more varieties to its lineup in the near future including craft beers and other drinks.

Good to know: Turks Head Brewery products are sold throughout Turks & Caicos at most bars, restaurants, and at some all-inclusive resorts on Providenciales, especially Beaches Turks & Caicos.

The Turks Head Brewery tour

The Turks Head Brewery is unique in that it also offers tours to the public. Starting off in 2017, these tours have gained popularity. Now, according to the reviews, they are considered among the most fun tours to embark on in Turks & Caicos. During a tour of the Turks Head Brewery, participants have a chance to learn about the beer production process, even speaking to on-site guides to find out further details on the brewing process. As part of this tour, visitors make use of a modern catwalk that was fitted specifically for the tours. This makes it possible to have a bird’s eye view of the brewing process which can be quite fascinating.

After the tour of Turks Head Brewery, visitors are taken to the signature custom-made bar. Once there, you’ll have a chance to taste the national beer of the Turks & Caicos, which is one of the most popular brews made on this island. While exploring the islands of the Turks & Caicos, you’re bound to come across art that catches your eye. This is especially so if you decide to browse through some of the shops on the island of Providenciales, the most popular island in this territory. Depending on the shop you go to, you may come across items like woven baskets and hats, local paintings, carvings, blown glass, holiday ornaments, pottery, sewn dolls, and more. Any of these items would be good options to take home as a souvenir.

In terms of local art and handicrafts, you can look in the direction of handmade woven crafts if you want something on the more authentic side. Many of these designs, including baskets, dolls, and mats, are created using techniques that date back to the traditional basket-making and boat-building trades that were once widely practiced on the islands.

For something a little more colorful, consider getting a few original paintings and watercolors created by local artists. These are available in the various art galleries in Providenciales. Expect to find artwork inspired by all aspects of life in Turks & Caicos including the beautiful beaches, captivating landscapes, and friendly people.

Expert tip: If you’re planning on going to Turks & Caicos, this Turks & Caicos packing list can help you get ready for your vacation. Not only are conch-inspired dishes popular in Turks & Caicos, conch-inspired souvenirs are also all the rage! As you look around in the shops, you're likely to come across conch-themed art, jewelry, homeware, and decorative shells. For a unique item that you can gift, you can search for locally handcrafted jewelry featuring the rare, pastel-hued conch pearl. This is a great gift to give to someone special. For something a little more casual, you can pick up some small conch shells or conch-inspired jewelry and accessories.

Good to know: An interesting thing to note about the conch is that it is the only local shell that can legally be exported from Turks & Caicos. Visitors are allowed to take home a maximum of 3 conch shells without a permit.

After a Caribbean vacation, it’ll be completely worth it to return home with at least one bottle of local rum. Or you can get a couple of bottles, keep one for yourself and gift the others. A popular option of local rum is Bambarra, a sugar cane rum made from ingredients sourced from select areas throughout the Caribbean. This rum is said to have been named after the Bambarra settlement in Middle Caicos. It’s made in Providenciales, where it's blended and bottled by hand. There are many places in Turks and Caicos where you can purchase Bambarra Rum and Bambarra Rum Cakes.

Two of the most popular souvenirs that you might want to look into getting before leaving Turks & Caicos are local pepper sauce and sea salt. You might taste the local hot sauce as you make your way around the islands experiencing the local cuisine. One of the brands you would most likely have tried was Peppajoy Hot Sauce, which is described by some as being “addictively awesome”.

Peppajoy Hot Sauce was created by Delano Handfield, a Turks & Caicos national who served in the U.S. army. This island-inspired hot sauce uses scotch bonnet peppers as a base which means that it is not only really spicy but also allows you to incorporate that signature Turks & Caicos flavor into all your dishes from eggs and fish to chicken and more. At the end of your vacation, you can get a couple of bottles of this local hot sauce to bring home with you. Peppajoy Hot Sauce is only available in The Turks & Caicos for now. You can usually purchase it from local vendors.

Just as much as you might want to pick up some Peppajoy Hot Sauce to remind you of your time in Provo, you might also want to pick up some locally-sourced sea salt. Turks & Caicos sea salt can be used in food, margaritas, and as a soothing bath soak. This item is available in a variety of colors and preparations. The story behind the sea salt from these islands is inspiring too — you can find out more about this and the salt production in Turks & Caicos by visiting local museums.

Locally-made designer clothing

An article of clothing, preferably something island-inspired, is always a good option for a souvenir. In Turks & Caicos, there is a heap of options for apparel created by home-grown Turks & Caicos designers. For example, you can find silk scarves and resort wear from the Sea Sage brand, Caribbean lifestyle clothing from Konk Apparel, or just simple t-shirts with catchy phrases like the ‘I Want To Live On An Island’ line. All of the brands mentioned have a casual yet polished, even high-end, style, making them ideal as a souvenir or a gift. While in Turks & Caicos, you may also find several popular international fashion brands at local luxury boutiques.

Good to know: U.S. dollars are widely accepted in Turks & Caicos as this is the official currency of this destination.

Jewelry

Jewelry is a good option for a souvenir as this is one of those items that come at various price points. You can splurge on something really extravagant, or search around for the perfect local handmade jewelry item. One of the best options in this category is jewelry with conch pearl settings. These are rare pearls that are produced by the queen conch. They come in a range of alluring hues including pink, peach, white, or orange. Some of the local jewelry items are designed with sea glass and other semi-precious stones. The best part about this option is that you can have your item customized to suit you, or whoever it is that you’ll be purchasing it for.

The Jamaica immigration form also known as the Immigration/Customs C5 Card is a required document that all travelers need to complete before entering Jamaica. This form is necessary to get information about you, and your purpose for visiting Jamaica. A Jamaican immigration form does not replace a visa, but it is worth noting that travelers to Jamaica from the U.S. do not require a visa.

The Jamaica customs form is pretty straightforward and won’t require more than a few minutes to fill out. Some people need a little assistance filling out the form and this is something flight attendants can help with if you decide to wait until you're on your flight to complete the form. Keep in mind that it is possible to fill out the form online 24 hours before your entry. You have to make sure you submit this in a timely manner if you would like to take advantage of this convenience.

Use the correct ink

The first thing you need to know when it comes to filling out the Jamaica immigration form is that it matters what sort of ink you use to complete this form. Only black or blue ink pens can be used on the form. Prior to heading to the airport, make sure that you have suitable pens in your hand luggage to fill out your immigration form at the airport. While the air hostesses sometimes offer pens for this purpose, there usually are not enough to go around for everyone on the plane.

Write clearly

Once you start filling out your Jamaica immigration form, you’ll want to make sure that you write legibly. This will help shorten the time it will take for the customs officer to read the form. Though it can be tricky to write while on an airplane due to space constraints and other factors, it's worth taking a little extra time to fill in your form to make sure it's easily read.

Check both sides of the form

Keep in mind that there are two sides to the immigration form. If you’re traveling as a married couple or with your family, you’ll just need to fill in the back of one of the forms. For families, this rule also applies if your children are under 18. Make sure that you fill in all the questions on both sides, as needed.

The second side of your Jamaica immigration form contains questions about your travel group. You must specify who is accompanying you on your vacation. If you're going with your spouse and children under the age of 18, one adult in your travel group can fill out this information. For group travelers or families with children over the age of 18, each adult (over the age of 18) who is not the spouse of the individual filling out the form must fill out the second side of their own form.

Make sure that names match your passports

Regarding the names you put on your immigration forms (if traveling with a group or family), ensure that these match the passports of everyone in your group who will be filling out the immigration forms. This applies if you're traveling alone too.

Follow the correct format for dates

For dates, ensure that these are written with the day first, then the month, then the year as opposed to the month first as would typically be seen in the U.S. For example, November 12, 2022 would be written as 12/11/2022.

Insert your address correctly

When filling in your address, ensure that you use a street address, not a P.O. Box. P.O. Box addresses are not accepted on Jamaica immigration forms. Also, make sure that you have the address of where you will be staying in Jamaica. This is especially important if you’ll be spending your vacation at a private house or villa. For hotel and resort stays, the resort brand name and town are usually enough, but it is best to have the exact address to make the whole process simpler. The address that you place on your form should be the same on the forms of everyone in your travel party.

Put the correct flight number

Your flight number is usually included on your boarding pass so you might want to take a quick glance at that before entering it into the form. You also might hear your flight number being announced as well around the time that the forms are distributed, so it’s a good idea to listen out for this. You can always ask for confirmation if you’re not sure.

Fill in port arriving information

The ‘port arriving from’ question relates to the airport where your flight to Jamaica initially took off from. If you’re on a connecting flight or traveling to the airport from somewhere else, don’t make the mistake of putting the original town or state that you came from in this field.

Insert luggage information

One of the questions on the Jamaican immigration form has to do with how many pieces of luggage you have with you for your trip. In this section, you’ll want to include both your carry-on and check-in luggage. Each person in your travel party should include the number of pieces that they have with them. This number will most likely vary. If you have any luggage that was transported by other means, then you can declare this as ‘unaccompanied luggage’, which is the second part of the luggage question. This does not include any luggage that was delayed or put on a separate flight.

Expert tip: Speaking of luggage ... Want some tips on how to pack a suitcase? We’ve got you covered! We’ve also listed some of the Jamaica travel tips dos and don’ts to help make your vacation on this beautiful island that much more memorable.

Declare pharmaceuticals

There are certain things that you'll be expected to declare as part of the Jamaican immigration form, including pharmaceuticals (not including prescribed or over-the-counter medications for personal use). For medications, make sure that they are kept in the original packaging. With prescribed medication, you’ll want to make sure that labels are visible, which show that it is for personal and prescribed use.

Fresh fruit needs to be declared too

If you're traveling with fresh fruit, including anything you intended to eat on the flight but did not, you'll need to declare this on the second part of the form. If you don’t declare this and it is found, your item might be confiscated. This happens often when people forget that they've packed fresh fruit, and this can delay entry into Jamaica.

Sign your form

Once you're finished filling out your Jamaica immigration form, you will need to sign it. Your form will be considered incomplete without a signature, and it will not be accepted. Once you fill out both sides of your form, sign and submit it to the requesting officer, you’ll be all set for your vacation. We’ve included details on the second side of the immigration form below.

Expert tip: All-inclusive group vacations are a good idea in Jamaica as there's just so much to do on this island. If you stay at a resort like Beaches Resorts, there will be something to do for everyone in your family, from land and water sports to themed parties and tours around the island!

Pay attention to your duty-free limits

There are duty-free limits in Jamaica of up to $500 USD per person over age 18 on personal and household effects that are not for resale or in commercial quantities. This limit is stated on the customs form. The form also specifies the items you’ll need to declare. This leads us to our next point …

Be aware of which items you need to declare

You don’t need to declare every single item that you’re traveling with. However, it is important to be aware of which items need to be declared. Some of the things you will not need to declare include your laptop, your iPad, your cell phone, and your camera. These are typical items that travelers carry with them for their vacation and it would most likely be expected that you would have those. Most vacationers do not need to declare anything, but if you have anything that is under the $500 USD limit but appears to be more, bring a copy of the receipt in case you are questioned at customs.

When in doubt, declare everything!

If you’re unsure, the best bet is to declare all of your items to the customs officer. This can help to prevent any unnecessary delays.
